Just a short drive from Belleville is the municipality of Brighton, a quiet spot nestled on the shores of Lake Ontario. It’s home to Northumberland Health and Wellness Centre, a multidisciplinary clinic run by Dr. Amanda Mei, DC and Johanna Kelly, RMT. The clinic offers chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy and orthotics to local patients.
“The biggest value we hold is to treat our patients and community with the utmost integrity and respect,” says Amanda. “We are problem-solving based and look to successfully treat patient conditions so they can return to their normal life. We are advocates for the patient and want to empower them to be able to manage their health. We teach them about their condition, discuss the prognosis and give them the tools and knowledge to help manage their condition outside of the office.”
Amanda was working six days a week in two separate clinics west of Toronto and felt that city living wasn’t giving her the life balance she needed.
“A close friend of mine who had relocated to Belleville suggested I look around for opportunities, and I found this clinic. As they say, I didn’t choose Brighton; Brighton chose me.”
When Amanda took over the clinic in 2016, she soon began looking for a massage therapist who would complement her practice. Enter Johanna, a local resident working in the Durham region who was looking for a clinic closer to home so she could spend more time with her family. The two clicked and had a comfortable working dynamic from the beginning.
“We collaborate on patient management and refer to one another; this way, the patient knows that their health care providers have an open line of communication. This allows both disciplines to complement each other.”
What can you expect from a visit to the clinic? A calming, comfortable and professional atmosphere, with treatment specific to your needs. Massage therapy sessions with Johanna include soothing music and a warm table, matched with the techniques Johanna has honed over her 16 years as a licensed professional.
I'll just leave this right here.

Chiropractic treatments with Amanda vary depending on the patient’s condition. Her sessions may include acupuncture, soft tissue therapy and spinal manipulative therapy. Both Johanna and Amanda value taking the proper time with their patients, ensuring they receive the full care required.
“We do our utmost to stay on schedule, but dedicate time to patients based on their need that day. We would rather provide patients with superior care than be [tied] to the clock. Every single patient gets our full, undivided time and attention during their treatment,” says Amanda.
And what about the work-life balance that encouraged Amanda to move to this area? When she’s not treating patients, she can be found visiting local wineries and breweries, listening to live music or walking along the Bay of Quinte by Meyers Pier. “Being in nature is so therapeutic and I didn’t realize how much it was lacking when I was living in the city.”
She also appreciates that the area is highly entrepreneurial and enjoys connecting with groups such as Hello Boss Girl and Quinte Women in Business, where she can find support and community with fellow female business owners.
“There is just something so special about this region. It comes from the people who live here, the entrepreneurial spirit, and the host of activities available for people of all ages and stages of life,” says Amanda. “I can’t tell you how happy I am that I moved away from the hectic lifestyle of the city. I can own a house, have a thriving business all while hiking, sipping some wine and catching a great live band! Pure bliss!”
