An interview with Rachel Mendes of Last Call Pest Control.
Describe your business.
I own and operate a pest control company that provides high quality and affordable service. I specialize in bed bug and cockroach control but I take care of all insect pests, snakes and rodents. I happily provide seniors and military family discounts.
What brought you to the region?
I was in a life transition where I had to choose where to live and work and the Bay of Quinte suits me perfectly. I love the small town feel with all the amenities of a big city.
What makes the Bay of Quinte a good fit for your business?
Bay of Quinte has a diverse need for pest control. There are cottages, apartments, single-family homes and businesses, which gives me something different to do every day.
What was the hardest thing about starting a business?
Believing in myself, my education and my experience enough to go out on my own. I’ve been in the field for seven years and gained so much knowledge where I’m comfortable selling my service.
What advice do you have for entrepreneurs in the area?
Go for it! The opportunities are out there and it’s a beautiful community to live and work in.
What surprised you about starting a business in a smaller community?
I worked in the heart of downtown Toronto for 10 years and it’s so busy! It’s always go, go, go and when I started this company in Bay of Quinte I was pleasantly surprised with the friendliness and welcoming attitude from the residents and vacationers.
How have you changed your operations during the pandemic?
Pest control is always needed. I always use PPE including mask and gloves for my own safety, so it was simple for me to continue doing so. I typically offer more exterior services at this time to keep a safe distance from clients and I do most communication about the service on the phone so that when I arrive, they already know what to expect.
What is something good that has come from this difficult situation?
My whole business was born from a difficult situation. Having to move cities and being laid off from my employer came all at once but I’ve created something so wonderful with the support of my family and friends. I’m very proud of my decision to go out on my own since I have a lot of education and experience and I know I can provide the community with great service.
If you were to have one word tattooed on you, what would it be?
Indestructible.
