An interview with Greg Murphy of Hero Editorial.

Describe your business.

Hero Editorial Services offers a comprehensive suite of editorial services to passionate communicators.

What brought you to the region?

[My] dad was posted at CFB Trenton, and retired there.

What makes the Bay of Quinte a good fit for your business?

I do a lot of work in Canada book publishing, the heart of which lies in Toronto. I don’t need to commute into the city, but I live close enough that I can drive in for events [and] meetings.

What was the hardest thing about starting a business?

Learning to be an editor, let alone learning to be a small-business owner. The former requires lots and lots of education and practice and dedication.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs?

Read about what it is you do. Learn the names of leaders in your industry, and follow them.

What surprised you about starting a business here?

Word travels very fast. If you do a good job, it isn’t hard to find more work.

Describe your perfect day off.

My girlfriend and I will drive to my parents’ house, pick up the dog and go explore. [After] we’ll join my brother and sister for a swim. Then we’ll cook a late supper and watch anime or a movie.

What’s your secret to surviving winter?

Get exercise any way you can to help fight off the winter blues. And join a club to stay social.

If you were to tattoo one word on your body, what would it be?

Tigana. Tigana is the setting of a fantasy epic by Guy Gavriel Kay.
