Young Entrepreneur – Megan Fisher

An Interview with Young Entrepreneur Megan Fisher owner of The Barking Spot based in Quinte West. thebarkingspot.biz

Describe your business.

My name is Megan Fisher, I own The Barking Spot in Trenton.  My first day of business was June 30th, 2014.  We are now a thriving grooming salon with a small boutique filled with other small business’ merchandise.  We offer a completely different atmosphere than other salons to help the pets feel more relaxed and at home.  We like to stock the highest quality, all natural raw food and treats.  We make customer service our number 1 priority with a full time customer service specialist to send reminder calls and answer any questions our clients may have.

How long have you been here?

I have lived in Trenton since July of 2003 when my family moved here from Ottawa.

What brought you to the region?

My dad got a job at CFB Trenton so our family moved here for his employment.  He is a retired member of the Canadian Forces and this was our last and final move.

What makes the Bay Of Quinte region a good fit for your business?

It’s the perfect in between of a small town and a large city with many surrounding communities.  It makes you really feel like you belong.  Trenton has a very small town feeling with enough people for a small business to flourish.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs in the area?

Make a business plan, research the need for your service or product in the community.  Then add your personal touch or flair that makes you stand out from everyone else.

What surprised you about starting a business in a smaller community?

The fact that I was busy from the very first day I opened was a very pleasant surprise for me.  Word of mouth advertising in a smaller community has got to be the best part.

Describe your perfect day off.

My perfect day off would be spent enjoying the variety of tasks owning a business puts you through.  It gives you the opportunity to enjoy each part, because lets be honest, I never really do have a day off.  If by chance I do get to have a day completely free of work then it would be spent with my family.

What’s your secret to surviving winter?

The winter season keeps me very busy at The Barking Spot with pre Christmas grooms and fluffier haircuts to keep warm. In between all of that I also take a week off to go somewhere warm with my family.
