An interview with young entrepreneur Shelby Lisk of Shelby Lisk Photography.
Describe your business.
I’m a photographer, artist and writer. I freelance for magazines, write
poetry, exhibit my artwork and work as a documentary and commercial photographer.
What brought you to the region?
I grew up in Belleville but moved away after high school. Travelling made me realize that my connection to my home, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, was
a missing part of me, so I moved home.
What makes the Bay of Quinte a good fit for your business?
Its proximity to Tyendinaga. I can study the Mohawk language, work on stories that benefit my community and learn more about myself and my family.
What was the hardest thing about starting a business?
All I want to do is create, and the amount of time I have to spend behind a
computer can be discouraging some days.
What advice do you have for entrepreneurs?
Only take jobs you want to do because those are the jobs that will keep coming your way.
What surprised you about starting a business here?
The number of people moving here to start businesses surprises me.
Describe your perfect day off.
Drinking tea, reading a book in the morning, and then doing something in the sunshine in the afternoon.
What’s your secret to surviving winter?
Vacations! And yoga.
If you were to tattoo one word on your body what would it be?
My best friend and I are thinking of getting GRL PWR tattooed on our butts. No joke.
